London, circa 1870

Original on board. 70cm x 70cm.

Britain in 1870 was the 'workshop of the world' and this was the centre of it.

Workshops, factories, housing, taverns, chuches (including St Pauls) all crammed into tiny, dirty and dangerous streets. Every square foot, churning out product from finished leather to iron nails. All of which was sent around the world. The long journey began on the Thames...the river was Londons trade highway.
